The Issue:

Growers, shippers, and processors are under increasing pressure to improve and report sustainability performance to buyers. While the purpose of the requests – to increase transparency – has significant benefits to the industry as a whole, the large burden to track, compile, aggregate, analyze, and report on the data buyers are requesting is a significant burden to individual growers, shippers, and processors, especially if reporting requests variety from buyer to buyer.  SISC’s mission is to provide a single yardstick for measuring sustainable and regenerative performance – and to do so in a way that helps growers, and packer/shipper/processors create their own internal sustainability programs as well as real natural resource improvements on the ground.

Metrics, such as the Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops (SISC) Energy Use/GHG metric can be used by growers as an internal management tool, as well as a way to report emissions to buyer requests.  This allows tier one suppliers to work with growers to reduce their GHG emissions, as well as a way for them to report up to buyers, who are under increasing pressure to track their Scope 3 emissions from their supply chains.
