Climate Smart Specialty Crops Calculator

Soil Emissions Estimate Tool for Specialty Crops

SISC is excited to introduce our new Soil Emissions Measurement tool developed by SISC in partnership with Colorado State University, designed to empower specialty crop growers in California. This beta version, funded by the generous support of the WalMart Foundation, helps farmers understand soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on crop type, location, and management practices. With the capability to calculate current soil GHG emissions for popular crops like Almonds, Avocados, and Tomatoes, growers can estimate emissions per unit area and harvested product. Additionally the tool allows for comparisons with conventional management systems, aiding in the adoption of conservation practices.

The new Soil Emissons measurement tool is now included in the SISC Calculator, along with the entire suite of SISC metrics.  The SISC Calculator is free for growers to use, and available for packer/shipper/processors or brands to use with their supply chains as aggregators as well.

In addition, any ag software company which is interested can build this tool, along with other SISC metrics, into their software platforms for free - only requirement is that they become a member of SISC.  Contact aedwards@stewardshipindex.org to find out more.

In addition, Colorado State has set up a stand alone site for this Climate Smart Specialty Crops Calculator.  This version of the tool provides any user a chance to get to know the tool, its inputs and outputs and its ease of use.

In addition, the CO State Methods Overview on the development of this tool is available here.
